When comparing quotations from different nepheline and feldspar suppliers, the FOB or CIF price per ton is only part of the story. The true cost that matters to your production economics is the landed cost β the total cost per ton of material delivered to your factory warehouse, including all freight, insurance, duties, port charges, and inland transport. This guide helps you calculate and compare landed costs accurately.
Landed Cost Components
| Component | FOB Purchase | CIF Purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Material price | Your FOB quote | Included in CIF |
| Ocean freight | You arrange + pay | Included in CIF |
| Marine insurance | You arrange | Included in CIF |
| Import duty | You pay | You pay |
| Port handling / THC | You pay | You pay |
| Customs clearance fee | You pay | You pay |
| Inland transport | You pay | You pay |

Cost-Per-Oxide Comparison
The landed cost per ton is not the final comparison metric. Because nepheline provides more alkali and alumina per ton than feldspar, the cost per unit of useful oxide is often lower for nepheline even at a higher per-ton price. Calculate: landed cost divided by (total alkali percentage / 100) = cost per ton of alkali delivered. For K100 at USD 208/ton with 14.18% alkali: USD 208 / 0.1418 = USD 1,467 per ton of alkali. For a typical Indian feldspar at USD 120/ton landed with 11% alkali: USD 120 / 0.11 = USD 1,091 per ton of alkali. In this example, the Indian feldspar delivers cheaper alkali per ton β but the nepheline also delivers higher alumina, lower iron, wider firing range, and 30-50 degree C lower firing temperature. When you factor in the 5-10% energy savings from lower firing, the total cost comparison often favors nepheline.
