Single firing (monocottura) is the dominant production method for modern ceramic floor tiles β the green tile with applied glaze passes through the kiln just once, with body sintering and glaze maturation occurring simultaneously in a single 40-60 minute cycle. This is more energy-efficient than the traditional double-firing (bicottura) process, but places greater demands on raw material compatibility. The body must release gas (from carbonate decomposition and organic burnout) before the glaze seals the surface, and both body and glaze must reach their target properties within the same narrow temperature-time window.
Why Nepheline Excels in Single Firing
Nepheline syenite is particularly advantageous for single-fire production for three reasons. First, its lower melting onset (approximately 1050 degrees C) means the body begins vitrifying earlier in the firing cycle, allowing more time for gas escape before the surface becomes fully sealed β reducing the risk of bloating and pinhole defects. Second, its wide firing range provides a larger temperature window where both body and glaze are at their optimal maturation state β essential when body and glaze must mature simultaneously. Third, the higher alumina content strengthens the body at intermediate temperatures, providing structural integrity during the critical gas-release phase when the body is still partially porous.
Formulation Tips for Single Firing
For monocottura floor tiles: use K100 at 18-25% in the body. Ensure calcite (CaCO3) content is below 3% to minimize gas generation during glaze sealing. Position nepheline as the primary flux replacing higher-gas-generating materials. For the glaze: use SY101 K-feldspar rather than nepheline to avoid excessive glaze fluidity that could cause defects during the gas-release phase. The ideal single-fire combination is nepheline in the body for efficient vitrification and K-feldspar in the glaze for controlled melting behavior.
Our Recommendation
K100 for standard single-fire tile bodies. K200 for white-body single-fire porcelain. SY101 for the corresponding glaze formulations.
