Application Overview
The standard soda-lime-silica glass composition uses silica sand as the primary glass former, soda ash (Na2CO3) as the main flux, and limestone (CaCO3) as a stabilizer. Nepheline syenite enters this recipe as a partial replacement for soda ash and as an alumina source. The economics are compelling: nepheline provides Na2O (the same flux as soda ash) plus Al2O3 (which improves glass durability) at lower cost per unit of useful oxide than purchasing soda ash and alumina separately.
