Yet the fundamental chemistry is the same: flux materials like feldspar and nepheline syenite control melting, glass formation, and surface quality in art ceramic bodies and glazes just as they do in industrial production.

Nepheline in Art Ceramic Bodies

For hand-thrown and sculptural work, nepheline syenite offers potters a wider firing range than feldspar — providing more forgiveness in the unpredictable temperature distribution of studio gas and wood kilns. The higher alumina content strengthens the fired body, which is important for thin-walled thrown pieces and cantilevered sculptural forms. Our K100 grade is well-suited for studio use: the 100-mesh particle size integrates well into plastic clay bodies without causing surface defects on the throwing wheel, and the Fe2O3 of 0.12% provides good whiteness for white stoneware and porcelain bodies while being cost-effective for the smaller quantities that studio potters typically purchase.

Nepheline & Feldspar in Art Glazes

Art potters use nepheline and feldspar as primary flux components in glaze recipes. GP20 is particularly popular for matte and crystalline glaze experimentation — its high CaO promotes the crystal growth that creates stunning decorative effects. K200 serves potters working with transparent and celadon glazes where iron-free clarity is essential. SY101 K-feldspar provides the controlled melting behavior needed for textured and crawling glaze effects where melt viscosity is a key variable.
