Spodumene (LiAlSi2O6) is a lithium-bearing mineral sometimes used as a flux in ceramics where its ultra-low thermal expansion is needed β particularly for thermal shock resistant cookware, ovenware, and kiln furniture.

The Li2O flux creates a very low-expansion glass phase, enabling products that withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking. Nepheline cannot replace spodumene in these applications because Na2O and K2O produce much higher-expansion glass. However, for all standard ceramic tile, sanitaryware, and tableware production, nepheline is strongly preferred: it is far cheaper per ton than spodumene (lithium minerals carry a premium due to battery industry demand), provides more Al2O3, and delivers adequate thermal properties for normal use.
