Spodumene (LiAlSi2O6) is a lithium-bearing mineral sometimes used as a flux in ceramics where its ultra-low thermal expansion is needed β€” particularly for thermal shock resistant cookware, ovenware, and kiln furniture.

Detailed Comparison

The Li2O flux creates a very low-expansion glass phase, enabling products that withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking. Nepheline cannot replace spodumene in these applications because Na2O and K2O produce much higher-expansion glass. However, for all standard ceramic tile, sanitaryware, and tableware production, nepheline is strongly preferred: it is far cheaper per ton than spodumene (lithium minerals carry a premium due to battery industry demand), provides more Al2O3, and delivers adequate thermal properties for normal use. Use spodumene only when thermal shock resistance is your primary specification. For everything else, our K200 or K100 nepheline grades deliver better performance at lower cost..
