However, lithium carbonate costs 10-50x more per ton than nepheline syenite (price varies with lithium battery market demand). This extreme cost difference limits lithium flux to specialty applications where its unique properties cannot be achieved any other way: cookware and ovenware requiring thermal shock resistance (only Li2O-containing glass phase withstands direct flame contact); dental ceramics requiring specific expansion matching to metal frameworks; specialty technical ceramics with ultra-low expansion requirements. For ALL other ceramic applications β tiles, sanitaryware, tableware, glass, and general ceramics β nepheline syenite provides superior economics. Even in applications where lithium flux was historically used, many manufacturers are reducing Li2CO3 content and supplementing with nepheline to manage costs while maintaining adequate performance. Our K200 and K100 grades serve as direct lithium-substitution materials for cost reduction in formulations that previously used excessive Li2CO3.
